Big Data Analytics and the Data Lakes

In recent decades, the Internet has evolved from a research network into a global communications network. During this time span, a large number of services and applications have emerged, which are no longer an integral part of everyday life, especially on mobile devices. Per the recent study by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), there are currently about 6 billion mobile subscribers, which corresponds to a percentage of 86 of the world's population. The percentage of active mobile subscribers with access to broadband networks still amounts to 16 percent of the world's population or 1.1 billion people. Including households with cable-bound Internet access, 33 percent of the world's population or 2.3 billion people use the Internet today.

This enormous number of subscribers, combined with the ever-increasing number of different services, creates an unimaginable amount of data, both user data, as well as profiling and statistical data. Overall, the data volume generated in 2016 is estimated to be 2.7 zettabytes (equivalent to 2.7 billion terabytes) in a study conducted by International Data Corporation (IDC) a growth of 48% of data produced, an enormous financial potential is slumbering, which often remains secret. These data are also referred to as the new oil of the digital age: in unprocessed form, they are relatively useless, but if they are able to structure the data by means of complex procedures and analysis, they can be used to answer new questions of financial potential. Exactly in this environment, the term "Big Data" comes into play. This is an abstract concept for any kind and number of data that are no longer manageable with traditional data analysis methods and therefore require new techniques and technologies.
